PROTEIN SUMMARY GENE INFORMATION RNA DATA ANTIBODY DATA
GENERAL INFORMATIONi

General description of the gene and the encoded protein(s) using information from HGNC and Ensembl, as well as predictions made by the Human Protein Atlas project.

Gene namei

Official gene symbol, which is typically a short form of the gene name, according to HGNC.

USP36
Synonyms FLJ12851, KIAA1453
Gene descriptioni

Full gene name according to HGNC.

Ubiquitin specific peptidase 36
Protein classi

Assigned HPA protein class(es) for the encoded protein(s).

Enzymes
Metabolic proteins
Plasma proteins
Predicted locationi

All transcripts of all genes have been analyzed regarding the location(s) of corresponding protein based on prediction methods for signal peptides and transmembrane regions.

  • Genes with at least one transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, according to prediction methods or to UniProt location data, have been further annotated and classified with the aim to determine if the corresponding protein(s) are secreted or actually retained in intracellular locations or membrane-attached.

  • Remaining genes, with no transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, will be assigned the prediction-based location(s).

The annotated location overrules the predicted location, so that a gene encoding a predicted secreted protein that has been annotated as intracellular will have intracellular as the final location.

PROTEIN FUNCTION
Protein function (UniProt)i

Useful information about the protein provided by UniProt.

Deubiquitinase essential for the regulation of nucleolar structure and function 1, 2, 3. Required for cell and organism viability 4, 5, 6. Plays an important role in ribosomal RNA processing and protein synthesis, which is mediated, at least in part, through deubiquitination of DHX33, NPM1 and FBL, regulating their protein stability 7, 8, 9, 10. Functions as a transcriptional repressor by deubiquiting histone H2B at the promoters of genes critical for cellular differentiation, such as CDKN1A, thereby preventing histone H3 'Lys-4' trimethylation (H3K4) 11. Specifically deubiquitinates MYC in the nucleolus, leading to prevent MYC degradation by the proteasome: acts by specifically interacting with isoform 3 of FBXW7 (FBW7gamma) in the nucleolus and counteracting ubiquitination of MYC by the SCF(FBW7) complex 12. In contrast, it does not interact with isoform 1 of FBXW7 (FBW7alpha) in the nucleoplasm 13. Interacts to and regulates the actions of E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase NEDD4L over substrates such as NTRK1, KCNQ2 and KCNQ3, affecting their expression an functions 14. Deubiquitinates SOD2, regulates SOD2 protein stability 15. Deubiquitinase activity is required to control selective autophagy activation by ubiquitinated proteins 16. Promotes CEP63 stabilization through 'Lys-48'-linked deubiquitination leading to increased stability 17. Acts as a SUMO ligase to promote EXOSC10 sumoylation critical for the nucleolar RNA exosome function in rRNA processing 18. Binds to pre-rRNAs 19.... show less
Molecular function (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins due to their particular molecular function.

Hydrolase, Protease, RNA-binding, Thiol protease, Transferase
Biological process (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins because they are involved in a particular biological process.

Ubl conjugation pathway
Gene summary (Entrez)i

Useful information about the gene from Entrez

This gene encodes a member of the peptidase C19 or ubiquitin-specific protease family of cysteine proteases. Members of this family remove ubiquitin molecules from polyubiquitinated proteins. The encoded protein may deubiquitinate and stabilize the transcription factor c-Myc, also known as MYC, an important oncoprotein known to be upregulated in most human cancers. The encoded protease may also regulate the activation of autophagy. This gene exhibits elevated expression in some breast and lung cancers. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2016]... show less
PROTEIN INFORMATIONi

The protein information section displays alternative protein-coding transcripts (splice variants) encoded by this gene according to the Ensembl database.

The Splice variant identifier links to the Ensembl website protein summary for the selected splice variant. The data in the Swissprot and TrEMBL columns links to corresponding pages in the UniProt database.

The protein classes assigned to this protein are shown if expanding the data in the protein class column. Parent protein classes are in bold font and subclasses are listed under the parent class.

The length of the protein (amino acid residues according to Ensembl), molecular mass (kDalton), predicted signal peptide and number of predicted transmembrane region(s) according to in-house majority decision methods based on sets of predictors are also reported.
