PROTEIN SUMMARY GENE INFORMATION RNA DATA ANTIBODY DATA
GENERAL INFORMATIONi

General description of the gene and the encoded protein(s) using information from HGNC and Ensembl, as well as predictions made by the Human Protein Atlas project.

Gene namei

Official gene symbol, which is typically a short form of the gene name, according to HGNC.

ANKRD17
Synonyms FLJ22206, GTAR, KIAA0697, MASK2, NY-BR-16
Gene descriptioni

Full gene name according to HGNC.

Ankyrin repeat domain 17
Protein classi

Human disease related genes
Plasma proteins
Predicted locationi

All transcripts of all genes have been analyzed regarding the location(s) of corresponding protein based on prediction methods for signal peptides and transmembrane regions.

  • Genes with at least one transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, according to prediction methods or to UniProt location data, have been further annotated and classified with the aim to determine if the corresponding protein(s) are secreted or actually retained in intracellular locations or membrane-attached.

  • Remaining genes, with no transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, will be assigned the prediction-based location(s).

The annotated location overrules the predicted location, so that a gene encoding a predicted secreted protein that has been annotated as intracellular will have intracellular as the final location.

PROTEIN FUNCTION
Protein function (UniProt)i

Useful information about the protein provided by UniProt.

Could play pivotal roles in cell cycle and DNA regulation 1. Involved in innate immune defense against viruse by positively regulating the viral dsRNA receptors DDX58 and IFIH1 signaling pathways 2. Involves in NOD2- and NOD1-mediated responses to bacteria suggesting a role in innate antibacterial immune pathways too 3. Target of enterovirus 71 which is the major etiological agent of HFMD (hand, foot and mouth disease) 4. Could play a central role for the formation and/or maintenance of the blood vessels of the circulation system (By similarity).... show less
Molecular function (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins due to their particular molecular function.

RNA-binding
Biological process (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins because they are involved in a particular biological process.

Host-virus interaction, Immunity, Innate immunity
Gene summary (Entrez)i

Useful information about the gene from Entrez

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the family of ankyrin repeat-containing proteins, and contains two distinct arrays of ankyrin repeats in its amino-terminal region, one with 15 ankyrin repeats, and the other with 10 ankyrin repeats. It also contains a nuclear export signal, nuclear localization signal, and a cyclin-binding RXL motif. Localization of this protein to the nucleus has been shown experimentally, and interactions between this protein and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 have been observed. It has been suggested that this protein plays a role in both DNA replication and in both anti-viral and anti-bacterial innate immune pathways. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2015]... show less
PROTEIN INFORMATIONi

The protein information section displays alternative protein-coding transcripts (splice variants) encoded by this gene according to the Ensembl database.

The Splice variant identifier links to the Ensembl website protein summary for the selected splice variant. The data in the Swissprot and TrEMBL columns links to corresponding pages in the UniProt database.

The protein classes assigned to this protein are shown if expanding the data in the protein class column. Parent protein classes are in bold font and subclasses are listed under the parent class.

The length of the protein (amino acid residues according to Ensembl), molecular mass (kDalton), predicted signal peptide and number of predicted transmembrane region(s) according to in-house majority decision methods based on sets of predictors are also reported.
