PROTEIN SUMMARY GENE INFORMATION RNA DATA ANTIBODY DATA
GENERAL INFORMATIONi

General description of the gene and the encoded protein(s) using information from HGNC and Ensembl, as well as predictions made by the Human Protein Atlas project.

Gene namei

Official gene symbol, which is typically a short form of the gene name, according to HGNC.

LARP1
Synonyms KIAA0731, Lar1, LARP, Lhp1, MGC19556
Gene descriptioni

Full gene name according to HGNC.

La ribonucleoprotein 1, translational regulator
Protein classi

Assigned HPA protein class(es) for the encoded protein(s).

Plasma proteins
Predicted locationi

All transcripts of all genes have been analyzed regarding the location(s) of corresponding protein based on prediction methods for signal peptides and transmembrane regions.

  • Genes with at least one transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, according to prediction methods or to UniProt location data, have been further annotated and classified with the aim to determine if the corresponding protein(s) are secreted or actually retained in intracellular locations or membrane-attached.

  • Remaining genes, with no transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, will be assigned the prediction-based location(s).

The annotated location overrules the predicted location, so that a gene encoding a predicted secreted protein that has been annotated as intracellular will have intracellular as the final location.

PROTEIN FUNCTION
Protein function (UniProt)i

Useful information about the protein provided by UniProt.

RNA-binding protein that regulates the translation of specific target mRNA species downstream of the mTORC1 complex, in function of growth signals and nutrient availability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Interacts on the one hand with the 3' poly-A tails that are present in all mRNA molecules, and on the other hand with the 7-methylguanosine cap structure of mRNAs containing a 5' terminal oligopyrimidine (5'TOP) motif, which is present in mRNAs encoding ribosomal proteins and several components of the translation machinery 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. The interaction with the 5' end of mRNAs containing a 5'TOP motif leads to translational repression by preventing the binding of EIF4G1 14, 15, 16, 17. When mTORC1 is activated, LARP1 is phosphorylated and dissociates from the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of mRNA 18, 19. Does not prevent binding of EIF4G1 to mRNAs that lack a 5'TOP motif 20. Interacts with the free 40S ribosome subunit and with ribosomes, both monosomes and polysomes 21, 22, 23, 24. Under normal nutrient availability, interacts primarily with the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of mRNAs encoding ribosomal proteins and increases protein synthesis 25, 26. Associates with actively translating ribosomes and stimulates translation of mRNAs containing a 5'TOP motif, thereby regulating protein synthesis, and as a consequence, cell growth and proliferation 27, 28. Stabilizes mRNAs species with a 5'TOP motif, which is required to prevent apoptosis 29, 30, 31, 32.... show less
Molecular function (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins due to their particular molecular function.

Repressor, RNA-binding
Biological process (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins because they are involved in a particular biological process.

Protein biosynthesis, Translation regulation
Gene summary (Entrez)i

Useful information about the gene from Entrez

Enables eukaryotic initiation factor 4E binding activity; nucleic acid binding activity; and ribosomal small subunit binding activity. Involved in several processes, including TORC1 signaling; cellular response to rapamycin; and posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression. Located in cytoplasmic stress granule. Colocalizes with TORC1 complex and polysomal ribosome. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Apr 2022]... show less
PROTEIN INFORMATIONi

The protein information section displays alternative protein-coding transcripts (splice variants) encoded by this gene according to the Ensembl database.

The Splice variant identifier links to the Ensembl website protein summary for the selected splice variant. The data in the Swissprot and TrEMBL columns links to corresponding pages in the UniProt database.

The protein classes assigned to this protein are shown if expanding the data in the protein class column. Parent protein classes are in bold font and subclasses are listed under the parent class.

The length of the protein (amino acid residues according to Ensembl), molecular mass (kDalton), predicted signal peptide and number of predicted transmembrane region(s) according to in-house majority decision methods based on sets of predictors are also reported.
