PROTEIN SUMMARY GENE INFORMATION RNA DATA ANTIBODY DATA
GENERAL INFORMATIONi

General description of the gene and the encoded protein(s) using information from HGNC and Ensembl, as well as predictions made by the Human Protein Atlas project.

Gene namei

Official gene symbol, which is typically a short form of the gene name, according to HGNC.

Synonyms
Gene descriptioni

Full gene name according to HGNC.

Ubiquitin specific peptidase 18
Protein classi

Assigned HPA protein class(es) for the encoded protein(s).

Enzymes
Human disease related genes
Metabolic proteins
Potential drug targets
Predicted locationi

All transcripts of all genes have been analyzed regarding the location(s) of corresponding protein based on prediction methods for signal peptides and transmembrane regions.

  • Genes with at least one transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, according to prediction methods or to UniProt location data, have been further annotated and classified with the aim to determine if the corresponding protein(s) are secreted or actually retained in intracellular locations or membrane-attached.

  • Remaining genes, with no transcript predicted to encode a secreted protein, will be assigned the prediction-based location(s).

The annotated location overrules the predicted location, so that a gene encoding a predicted secreted protein that has been annotated as intracellular will have intracellular as the final location.

PROTEIN FUNCTION
Protein function (UniProt)i

Useful information about the protein provided by UniProt.

Interferon-induced ISG15-specific protease that plays a crucial role for maintaining a proper balance of ISG15-conjugated proteins in cells 1. Regulates protein ISGylation by efficiently cleaving ISG15 conjugates linked via isopeptide bonds. Regulates T-cell activation and T-helper 17 (Th17) cell differentiation by deubiquitinating TAK1, likely to keep TAK1-TAB complexes in steady conditions 2. In turn, restricts activation of NF-kappa-B, NFAT, and JNK as well as expression of IL2 in T-cells after TCR activation 3. Acts as a molecular adapter with USP20 to promote innate antiviral response through deubiquitinating STING1 4. Involved also in the negative regulation of the inflammatory response triggered by type I interferon 5, 6. Upon recruitment by STAT2 to the type I interferon receptor subunit IFNAR2 interferes with the assembly of the ternary interferon-IFNAR1-IFNAR2 complex and acts as a negative regulator of the type I interferon signaling pathway 7.... show less
Molecular function (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins due to their particular molecular function.

Hydrolase, Protease, Thiol protease
Biological process (UniProt)i

Keywords assigned by UniProt to proteins because they are involved in a particular biological process.

Ubl conjugation pathway
Gene summary (Entrez)i

Useful information about the gene from Entrez

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ubiquitin-specific proteases (UBP) family of enzymes that cleave ubiquitin from ubiquitinated protein substrates. It is highly expressed in liver and thymus, and is localized to the nucleus. This protein efficiently cleaves only ISG15 (a ubiquitin-like protein) fusions, and deletion of this gene in mice results in a massive increase of ISG15 conjugates in tissues, indicating that this protein is a major ISG15-specific protease. Mice lacking this gene are also hypersensitive to interferon, suggesting a function of this protein in downregulating interferon responses, independent of its isopeptidase activity towards ISG15. PROTEIN INFORMATIONi

The protein information section displays alternative protein-coding transcripts (splice variants) encoded by this gene according to the Ensembl database.

The Splice variant identifier links to the Ensembl website protein summary for the selected splice variant. The data in the Swissprot and TrEMBL columns links to corresponding pages in the UniProt database.

The protein classes assigned to this protein are shown if expanding the data in the protein class column. Parent protein classes are in bold font and subclasses are listed under the parent class.

The length of the protein (amino acid residues according to Ensembl), molecular mass (kDalton), predicted signal peptide and number of predicted transmembrane region(s) according to in-house majority decision methods based on sets of predictors are also reported.
